Danger wank

United Kingdomactalso: Risk wank

A wank undertaken in circumstances where discovery is not unlikely, and where that risk is, regrettably, the point.

What it means

A danger wank is the act of having a wank in a situation where being caught is a genuine and acknowledged possibility, and where the thrill of that possibility is, for reasons we shall not examine too closely, the entire motivation. The classic scenario involves a household member who has announced they are on their way home, and a conscious decision, taken with full knowledge of the timetable, to press on regardless.

The danger wank is not, as a rule, planned. One does not put it in the diary. It tends to arise when a window of opportunity that was perfectly adequate begins to narrow, and the participant elects not to abandon the enterprise. What started as a routine Tuesday afternoon becomes, through poor time management, something rather more sporting.

The term is descriptive, not aspirational. We make that distinction firmly, though we accept that a certain sort of reader will treat it as a challenge. We cannot stop you. We are a dictionary.

Where it comes from

The phrase belongs to a long and not entirely dignified British tradition of applying the language of extreme sports to activities that take place in a bedroom. Like the tactical wank, it emerged from late-night television and student culture in the 1990s and 2000s, a period that was not short on contributions to the English language.

Its survival into mainstream slang is not surprising. The British have always had a talent for giving clinical names to embarrassing situations. It makes the whole business feel more like a recognised field of study and less like something your nan would clip you round the ear for. The term appears in comedy panel shows, university freshers’ guides, and the sort of group chat messages that would not survive a tribunal.

How it is used

“She texted saying she’d left Tesco. That’s twelve minutes. Absolute danger wank territory and he still went for it. The man has nerves of steel and the judgement of a lemming.”

“I wasn’t planning a danger wank. I was planning a perfectly reasonable Wednesday afternoon wank. But then the Ocado driver turned up twenty minutes early, and suddenly the whole thing had stakes.”

“It’s only a danger wank if you know the risk beforehand. If you just get walked in on, that’s not a danger wank, that’s a disaster. There are rules.”

The term functions as both noun and modifier. One can “have a danger wank,” “attempt a danger wank,” or, in more reflective moments, “admit that was a danger wank.” It pairs naturally with expressions of regret.

The distinction from a stealth wank

The danger wank is frequently confused with the stealth wank, but the two are not the same thing and we would be failing in our scholarly duty if we did not clarify. A stealth wank is defined by the effort to avoid detection through care, timing, and operational silence. A danger wank accepts the possibility of detection and finds, in that acceptance, something that is not entirely unpleasant.

One is a matter of technique. The other is a matter of nerve. The stealth wanker is a submarine captain. The danger wanker is a man who has heard the front door and decided that cowardice is not, on balance, his style.

If the danger wank is too much excitement for a weeknight, you may prefer the more measured approach of the tactical wank, which is about preparation rather than peril. For those who favour discretion over drama, the stealth wank remains the gentleman’s choice. And for a touch of unnecessary luxury, there is always the posh wank, which we are not at liberty to explain in polite company but which is defined elsewhere in the dictionary.
