Posh wank
A wank conducted while wearing a condom, upgrading the proceedings from functional to almost civilised and sparing the bedside table entirely.
What is a posh wank
A posh wank is a wank performed while wearing a condom. That is the whole of it. No further accessories are involved, no special technique is required, and nobody else need be present. A condom is applied to a situation that does not, in any practical or reproductive sense, call for one. The reasons are twofold: the sensation is not unpleasant, and the aftermath is not your problem.
It is, if we are being honest, one of the more sensible uses a person can find for the three condoms that have been sitting in their wallet since 2019. They were going to expire anyway. One might as well get some value.
The term carries no genuine class implication. Nobody performing a posh wank is doing so in a smoking jacket (though we would not presume to rule it out). “Posh” here follows the same British logic that gives us posh crisps, posh coffee, and posh toilet roll. It means: the normal thing, but with a minor and faintly ridiculous upgrade. The activity remains identical. It simply comes with packaging now.
Where the term comes from
British slang attaches “posh” to anything that has been improved beyond what the situation strictly demands. A posh sandwich has rocket in it. A posh pub has table service. A posh wank has a condom on. The pattern is not complicated.
What is somewhat unusual is how uniformly the phrase is understood across the UK. Most slang of this nature develops regional variation (the Scots, the Geordies, and the West Country rarely agree on terminology for anything, let alone this). The posh wank, however, appears to have reached national consensus with remarkably little fuss. Linguists have not, to our knowledge, published on the matter. We live in hope.
The earliest documented uses turn up in internet forums from the early 2000s, though the phrase was almost certainly in spoken circulation well before anyone thought to type it. It is not the sort of thing that tends to appear in parish records.
How it is used
The posh wank occupies a peculiar position in the national vocabulary: it is used sincerely and as mockery in roughly equal measure, sometimes within the same sentence.
“Can’t come to the pub. Having a night in. Posh wank, the works.” “He bought the Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference ready meal AND had a posh wank. Apparently it’s self-care now.”
The second speaker there is doing something very British, which is treating another person’s minor luxury as a matter for public commentary. This is not disapproval. It is, if anything, respect delivered in the only format the British find comfortable: ridicule.
The phrase, curiously, is almost never whispered. People who would sooner die than discuss their browsing habits will announce a posh wank to a group chat without a moment’s hesitation. The condom, it seems, lends the whole business an air of respectability. One is not merely indulging; one is indulging responsibly. Not unlike having a salad with your chips.
Practicalities we will address only briefly
The clean-up advantage is not nothing. We will not dwell on specifics, because this is a dictionary and we have standards (such as they are), but the appeal is immediately obvious to anyone who has ever had to locate a sock in a hurry. The posh wank solves a logistical problem with quiet efficiency, and for that alone it has earned its place in the national conversation.
Whether the sensation itself constitutes an upgrade is a matter of spirited personal debate that we are not remotely qualified to adjudicate.

The tactical wank is defined by its timing (before a date, to ensure clarity of thought). The hand shandy is defined by being a more polite way of saying the same thing your nan would clip you round the ear for. The posh wank is defined purely by equipment. All three may, on a sufficiently ambitious evening, be combined into a single event, though documenting such a hat-trick is beyond our editorial remit.
