Cheeky wank
A quick, opportunistic wank seized during a brief window of privacy, typically in a setting where one has absolutely no business doing so.
What is a cheeky wank
A cheeky wank is an opportunistic, spur-of-the-moment act of self-gratification carried out in a setting or timeframe where one has, by any reasonable measure, no business attempting it. Not to be confused with its more reckless cousin the danger wank, the cheeky wank is defined less by genuine peril and more by sheer audacity. It is the wanking equivalent of nipping into a Greggs when you said you were popping to the cashpoint.
The operative word is “cheeky.” In British English, “cheeky” describes something that is not quite wrong but not entirely above board either. A cheeky Nando’s. A cheeky pint at lunch. A cheeky wank while everyone is out in the garden admiring your nan’s hydrangeas. The speaker knows they are pushing their luck and is rather pleased about it.
What separates it from a tactical wank is the absence of strategy. There is no forethought, no grand plan. You were not supposed to be doing this at all. The opportunity simply presented itself, like finding a tenner in an old coat, and you made a decision that was not entirely admirable but also not entirely regrettable.
Where the phrase comes from
“Cheeky” has been doing heavy lifting in British slang for centuries, generally meaning impudent, brazen, or pleasantly shameless. Attach it to any noun and you get something that probably should not be happening but is happening anyway with a grin. The phrase “cheeky wank” follows the same grammatical logic as “cheeky fag break” or “cheeky half,” all describing minor transgressions committed with absolutely no remorse whatsoever.
The construction is not complicated. The humour, such as it is, lies in the breezy understatement. Calling it “cheeky” frames the whole business as a small, forgivable liberty rather than anything worth getting flustered about. Which is, of course, the most British possible approach to the matter.
How it is used
The phrase appears most often in casual conversation, typically after the fact, delivered with the same tone one might use to confess to eating the last biscuit.
“Had a cheeky one while Sarah was on the phone to her mum. Felt a bit wrong, if I’m honest. Not wrong enough to stop, mind.”
“Everyone went to Tesco for the big shop. I said I’d stay behind and watch the dog. The dog did not require watching for the full forty-five minutes.”
Common contexts include: halftime during a televised football match; the twenty-minute window between your flatmate leaving for work and your own alarm going off; visiting someone else’s house and being left alone in the spare room; and, according to a not insignificant number of search queries, at one’s place of employment during a quiet afternoon. We are not here to judge. We are barely here to define.
The cheeky wank is rarely discussed with genuine shame. It is treated as a minor, victimless transgression, a bit like jaywalking or using someone else’s Netflix login. The confession is part of the fun. If nobody ever finds out, it was hardly cheeky at all.
Related terms
The cheeky wank sits comfortably between the lazy wank, which requires no special circumstances at all, and the danger wank, which actively courts disaster. If the lazy wank is a walk in the park and the danger wank is base jumping, the cheeky wank is climbing over a fence that says “Private Property” and having a lovely time on the other side. Not illegal, exactly. Just a bit much.
